The charm of Spello, Umbria

spello old town

Charming small town in the Umbrian countryside

As you step into the gates of Spello, it seems as if you have stepped back in time into a picturesque tiny town with a lot of local pride and overly cute old cars. You find tiny delis that have been run by the same family for generations and a handful of churches and roman ruins.Ā  As we walk around, I see pots of flowers that dot along the detailed narrow streets, must be gorgeous when they are in full bloom. This medieval town seems as if it is melting down the hillside, as you approach it from a distance but blends well into the lush surrounding. Everything is appealing to the eye from the tiny stone houses, charming cobblestone alleyways to the Roman stone arches. Spello is a splash of texture with crumbling terracotta roof tiles to soft rose-coloured stone walls and you can’t help but to wander with your eyes. It is mesmerizing to walk to the top of the hillside (not to mention a good workout) observing the architecture, art and culture along the way and a stunning view at top of the rolling green hills of the Umbrian countryside. After a long walk, we stopped for a lovely lunch on the edge of the town overlooking a crowd of beautiful houses and breath in the fresh country air, while tasting the local burrata and carpaccio in this tranquil setting.
